On the road in Connecticut/ Observations on the Interstates I-84 and I-95 / considering CT DOT Public resources
Our Business is about supporting Businesses, Non Profits and Individuals with Accounting, Taxes, Advisory and more, it also includes supporting Local Government and helping us ALL connect with information that helps on Business as well as sharing observational information for Government's awareness and utilizing Government and Industry resources to better support us all. Research comes in different ways, sometimes it's through observation. Our role in all cases is to be a comprehensive solution set that uses an Analytical look at the many connection points between Government, Industry, Business, Non Profits and Individuals.
In this case our observation concerns Transportation in Connecticut and if you are in Business or are involved in Tourism or Trade, Transportation is a key element of Finances and Business accessibility - so we hope you won't mind that we share the following insights.
We are Regulars in Connecticut for Travel, Last Friday Night we were on I-84 North of Hartford near Stafford and Union en route to Boston and were caught up in the Traffic that got moved over to the Buckeye Highway. The Accident Occurred during the afternoon with two Tractor Trailers, a big fire and tragically a fatality as we understand it. Understandably an occurrence which also called into action a need for clean up crews and a work around plan.
When we passed this zone on I-84 it was late in the evening (some 8 hours after the accident) but it was a slow 1 1/2 tie up where traffic was still crawling at a snail's pace (and the Tractor Trailers along the way which were many, all pulled over for a siesta - probably due to better traffic info on the CB Radio). Tractor trailer accidents are a big deal and they take big equipment to move, but I-84 is also a major interstate and it's important to keep open pathways for Business and Trade. We don't know all the specifics, but we do know I-84 is a great highway and we hope CT gets all the funding support needed to keep lines open for Interstate Business and there may be some needs here due to the time that I-84 was out of commission Northbound on Friday evening.
As we moved at a gruelling and expensive pace (gas consumption expenses), lack of information led to a poor decision to keep rolling ahead, I spoke to another motorist as we both looked for ways to get better information on the Log Jam on the road ahead. It wasn't easy to find the updates and there wasn't much DOT presence on the road to let us know what was going on. This was a new dilemma as we hadn't hit incidents like this in recent memory on the road in Connecticut, So the simple and quick observation for Future travel was, where do you go for info in Connecticut on Transportation to avoid the repeat in the future?.
The Connecticut Government has a great web presence and you can find traffic info online pre-travel at http://www.ct.gov/dot/site/default.asp and more specifically at http://www.dotdata.ct.gov/etraffic/displayIncident.aspx. What we are hoping for (and did not find yet), is a twitter presence where travellers on the road can check in, or a radio or phone line for travel info. If you know the resource share it with us and we will post it here. it's a value added service for Residents, Business Travellers and Tourists on the road in Connecticut alike. It Encouraged us to write here with hopes to help on Public Awareness, as communications is important for Public Safety, Business and Tourism.
It's interesting the way that observations come in but sometimes you can't question it, you just look to share the knowledge in the event that concerned decision makers are tuning in and also for the opportunity to help share Business and Travel information relevant to commuters. Our weekend experiences on the road let us know that in some way we were meant to write about Connecticut Transportation on the Interstates with the hopes to support better communications lines on accidents. I do see that the Connecticut Patches and Newspapers cover this on twitter, but an official phone line, twitter line, or radio station to fix on could all help. You might have an answer on this so as stated if you have the info, please share and we will post it here.
The Return trip was a smooth run all the way through on I-84 and I-95 however there was some sense that the Southwest Bound I-95 Rest Stops immediately North of Stamford could use some better lighting and a periodic presence of Highway Patrol for the reason that in stopping at not one but two rest stops in succession we gained the clear impression that the Rest Stops have become hang outs for aggressive panhandlers and potentially bad actors that make them seem reminiscent of New York's Midtown Manhattan in the 1980s. There's a sense that those locations could be better managed for Public Safety and the greater objective of serving Residents, Business Travellers and Tourists in Motion in the State of Connecticut for Motorists, Families with kids and others looking for a degree of security. If it's a thought I've had I am sure I am not the first one to have experienced it, probably just the first to voice it. The goal is to share knowledge to hopefully prevent anyone from having a future bad experience - nothing more, nothing less.
All this being said - I have always had great Travel experiences in Connecticut, Connecticut has great Travel Info web links from CT DOT - my goal is just to help share insight that might help for the few areas where improvements may add value for Business Travellers, Residents and Tourists. Efficient Travel, Public Safety and Information on the road ahead all add value on the experience. As Connecticut Residents you already know that overall the Travel experience is a good one.

For the State of Connecticut's Treasurer's Office, the Investment Advisory Council plays an important role in supporting State Finance.
